On Monday, Netflix released the official First Look at the new Arnold Schwarzenegger series FUBAR which will premiere on May 25. The action-comedy series will be Schwarzie’s first ever television project. But we may just be here for the show’s lesbian element.

The show’s cast also features comedian Fortune Feimster who we featured here in Dallas Voice recently prior to her two shows in Dallas. She plays Roo Russell inthe show but that’s about all we know at this point. That, and she has some good ball slap game. You’ll see in the preview. But that’s not all. Lesbian comic Dana Goldberg is also listed as a producer on the show.

Additional cast includes Monica Barbaro, Milan Carter, Gabriel Luna, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Barbara Eve Harris, Aparna Brielle, Andy Buckley and Jay Baruchel. Schwarzenegger also serves as executive producer.

“Everywhere I go, people ask me when I’m going to do another big action comedy like True Lies. Well, here it is. FUBAR will kick your ass and make you laugh – and not just for two hours. You get a whole season. It’s been a joy to work with Nick, Skydance, and Netflix to give my fans exactly what they’ve been waiting for,” the former California governor and Mr. Olympia said in Monday’s press release.

So what’s the show exactly? From Netflix:

A CIA Operative on the verge of retirement discovers a family secret. Forced to go back into the field for one last job, the series tackles universal family dynamics set against a global backdrop of spies, action and humor.

QXSW: ‘Blindspotting’ actor Andrew Chappelle sees himself in his queer character

With South by Southwest in Austin underway, all the types of media are heading there to introduce their movies, music and multimedia. This is the place where recent best picture Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once made an early showing. So a lot can happen. For out actor Andrew Chappelle, he and his castmates will be hyping up the second season of his show Blindspotting on Thursday.

“I’m most excited about reconnecting with everyone in one place,” he said by phone from Los Angeles prior to leaving for Austin. “I haven’t been hanging with the crew, plus I was out of town for Gay Ski Week.”

He and the cast will be previewing episodes of the new season before its premiere on Starz April 14.

A spin-off and sequel of the film of the same name, the dramedy series centers on the character of Ashley and her son having to move in with her husband’s mother after he was incarcerated. Chappelle plays Scotty.

The last time Chappelle was in Austin, he was on tour with the musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This time around, he’s looking forward to being in the middle of the festival and its frenetic schedule of events and performances.

“Someone was explaining to me how they close the streets and there’s live music everywhere,” he said. “So I hope to see a lot of shows.”

But he’s there to speak about his character Scotty which is a role he’s thrilled to have. As a queer person of color, he’s able to play a queer POC on the show. In doing so, he describes the experience as a liberating one.

“It’s incredibly freeing to portray a QPOC on television. I wanna say it’s one of the greatest feelings ever,” he said. “Being an actor, we have to morph into different parts and I love that creativity and imagination and how it can run wild. But on the other hand, there is something so beautiful portraying a version of yourself that feels authentic.”

In the first season, the show explores his work relationship with main character Ashley (played by Jasmine Cephas Jones). He said this new season has been even more fun in fleshing out the two’s relationship.

“Jasmine’s character is trying to hold it together as best she can so we get to explore Scotty and hers relationship outside of work. But it’s also really representative of the relationship I’ve had with Jasmine after Hamilton,” he said.

Chappelle was a member of the original cast of Hamilton as was Jones before the show hit Broadway. That theater family has continued to work together since. Daveed Diggs serves as one of the show’s executive producers and Anthony Ramos has guest starred on the show as well.

So not only is Chappelle playing a character close to his own identity, he gets to do it amongst friends.

“The creators know me and they  are writing specifically for me,” he said. “ The way I exist in this world and how Scotty sounds just like me – that’s been the most fun.”

For Chappelle, it’s a cherished opportunity.

“I feel amazing how far we’ve come. This is special and rare and as someone who is a QPOC, striving to remain in the industry, there aren’t as many of us as one might think. This role speaks to the importance of representation,” he said. “I see the world changing in ways that are not great, but I, as this actor, have to stay resilient. We all do in many ways. Tears are necessary, but we can take pause, let what’s happening around us affect us and then take action.”

Davere Rogers and Andrew Chappelle in ‘Fanatic.’ (Courtesy)

Part of Chappelle’s own action is his short film Fanatic which has just hit the festival circuit.

Centered on two former boy band stars reuniting, The film was a result of his pandemic downtime and now he’s navigating the film festivals with it.

“I was twiddling my thumbs and I wanted to create something, but I wanted to make something people could laugh and enjoy. I’m so proud of the end product and if it gets acquired, I do want to explore what it looks like as a full-length.”

Watch the trailer here.

But for now, he’s doing the South By thing for Blindspotting and when the work is done, it’ll be time to enjoy Austin.

“I remember it as one of my favorite cities on the tour before, so I’m waiting to participate in this experience,” he said.

The new Netflix documentary about British pop duo Wham! will remind that in very short time, the two achieved major success throughout the world in music. With unprecedented access to both George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s personal archives plus never-before-seen footage, with previously unheard interviews, Wham! the Documentary charts their incredible journey from school friends to superstars.

In 1982, best friends and teenagers George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley founded Wham! (or, for a spell, Wham! UK) with the goal to conquer pop music.  Just four years later, they performed together as Wham! for the last time, at Wembley Stadium. That story of how the two dropped major, timeless hits “Club Tropicana,” “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go,” “Freedom,” “I’m Your Man” and “Last Christmas” among others will unfold this summer on Netflix.

Wham! is a feature-length documentary that captures those few years where the band topped the charts and broke through music barriers including performing the first western pop act concert in China. Chris Smith (Fyre Fest, Sr) directed the doc with John Battsek (The Deepest Breath) and Simon Halfon (Supersonic) serving as producers.

The documentary will be released globally on Netflix July 5.

Hulu’s new doc ‘We Live Here: The Midwest’ focuses on queer families in America’s Heartland

On Thursday, the streaming service Hulu dropped the trailer for its new documentary We Live Here: The Midwest, which centers on queer families and individuals and their struggles to live comfortably in the heartland during a time of rising discrimination and anti-LGBTQ legislature. The doc will premiere Dec. 6.

From Hulu:

All families must confront challenges, every day. But many also face a rising tide of discrimination and hate in their churches, schools, and even their own neighborhoods.

We Live Here: The Midwest profiles families who hope to stay in a part of the country they love, and where they have often established deep roots: a trans/queer family with five children in Iowa must find a new community after being expelled from their church; a gay Black couple with a young daughter test the line of acceptance in Nebraska; a lesbian couple homeschool their bullied son on a farm in Kansas; a gay teacher in Ohio creates a safe space for LGBTQIA+ students; and a couple in Minnesota struggles to rebuild their families following both of their transitions.

Meanwhile, Minnesota State Representative and queer mother, Heather Keeler, brings LGBTQIA+ rights to the political forefront despite ongoing death threats. Fundamentally, the film captures a crucial time where anti-queer legislation and sentiment is rapidly multiplying across the country, and the values of all midwestern families are put to the ultimate test.

The LGBTQ+ streaming platform OUTtv  announced today that today, March 5, is the premiere date for season two of Behind the Drag Queen of the Year Pageant Competition Award Contest Competition. The docu-series directed by Adrienne Gruben, who returns from the first season, goes behind the scenes of drag queens Alaska Thunderfuck and Lola LeCroix’s Drag Queen Of The Year contest.

The show follows the two as they put together their annual drag pageant to crown the Drag Queen Of The Year. This year’s tech crew is more equipped to capture the drama and chaos in putting together the drag pageant of the year.

Contestants include Tony Soto, Charles Galin, Snaxx, Abigail Beverly Hillz, Skynsuit, Nicki Jizz, Abhijeet and Beatrix Bella Rouge.

This season’s guest stars will feature Meatball, DVVSK, Sabbyiana, Tito Soto and Pseuda. Last year’s winner will be on hand to crown her successor, and to give the children a taste of what got her the title. A panel of celebrity judges, all of them either drag artists or drag enthusiasts, will work to name this year’s Drag Queen of the Year.

The clip below also shows an appearance by Drag Race alum Detox that’s hard to tell if she’s competing or just among the featured guests. It’s like two/thirds of a RoLaskaTox reunion.

“We’re so glad there were cameras rolling behind the scenes of the latest Drag Queen of the Year Pageant. The drama, the stress, the nonsense — with this series everyone gets to be a part of it all,” the two queens stated in Tuesday’s announcement. “Ultimately, we’re telling the stories of eight intrepid and inspiring Drag artists, amplifying their voices and sharing their unique magic with the world.”

The show was filmed in front of a live Hollywood audience. The series runs for six episodes and will be available OUTtv Apple TV Channel, the OUTtv Roku Channel and OUTtv.com.
